Maker Faire UK 2016

I love Maker Faire UK. I go every year. It’s a fantastical place where you can have amazing, in-depth talks with fascinating people, check out cool robots and see up and coming technology. It’s also a great place for crafts and art. It’s fun for both adults and children.

I really like Maker Faire if I didn’t get that across.

And it’s because of the reasons above that my pictures are both blurry and in small quantity. I will have to attend both days next year to really get all the pictures and attend all the talks because there is just so much to get through over the weekend.

But anyway here is just a small selection of the cool things I saw (and remembered to take a picture of) at Maker Faire. Read more

Things I printed this week #3

Well I started a new job this week so printing hasn’t been in full swing. Despite that, there has been some interesting prints and some further learning.

As part of finishing off my Prusa i3 Rework refurb I have been making a case for the RepRapDiscount Full Graphic Smart Controller. This one looked well designed so I gave it a print.

Prusa i3 Rework Refurb

So months ago I bought an i3 Rework from the friend that got me into 3D printing. My first printer is an i3 Rework so I could apply the knowledge I already had working on that. While this has been sitting there I had built a Kossel Mini and bought a kit to upgrade my first printer to a dual extrusion system.

When I finally had some free time I decided to spend some time refurbing it and making it compatible with 1.75mm filament.

Things I printed this week #2

Continuing my cartesian love most of the printing this week is for my refurb of a printer I bought from a friend months ago but haven’t really touched till now.

All of the following have been printed with Excelvan black 1.75mm PLA filament. You can get it cheap on ebay for about £11. It’s great for functional prints and leaves a really nice finish. That said there has been some strange flaws in the prints which effects the aesthetic. I have used other filaments and not noticed such flaws so I have to put it down to the filament.

So to end this tangential mini filament review I’ll say it’s cheap, and great for functional prints but I’d be concerned about using it for professional jobs/commissions.

And with that out of the way, on to the prints.

Things I printed this week

This is just a quick, (hopefully) weekly post showing what I’ve been printing and we might go a little more in-depth with the more complex prints.

I’m starting to pay my cartesian printers some attention again and one thing that has been bugging me is the stability of the Y carriage (or lack thereof).

Things I learned this week

Here are a few interesting things I learned this week. I hope you find one or more of these useful.

#1 Document details about prints.

This one seems obvious now but during a printing spree I’m on at the moment, I failed to detail all my Cura settings and when asked or posting on thingiverse I couldn’t remember the settings I’d used. So now all I do to remedy that is a quick screenshot of Cura. Read more
